IRP Survey Research Overview
The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) conducts surveys relevant to student development and University priorities. In consortium with other elite universities and colleges around the country, our office surveys entering freshmen, currently enrolled students, seniors, alumni, and parents of currently enrolled students. These surveys are conducted on a fairly regular schedule.
In addition to this core slate of surveys, we also periodically conduct other surveys of students, staff and faculty.
Survey research is one of the main methods by which the university systematically examines the undergraduate experience. Our office shares survey findings with the university’s various decision makers and those who directly interact with students in the classroom and elsewhere. These data provide a rich context for considering how Cornell goes about the business of becoming the very best research university for undergraduate education in the country.
All research conducted under the auspices of our office adheres to strict guidelines for the ethical and responsible treatment of our participants. Although we endeavor to share our survey findings as broadly as possible, results are never reported in a manner that would permit the identification of an individual's responses.
The information gleaned from our survey research has helped to inform program evaluation, policy deliberations, and decision making in such arenas as the residential initiatives and a host of student service delivery functions.
